Mary DiPaola Trio

The Mary DiPaola Trio will present a variety of arranged jazz standards and original compositions of the featured performers. Mary and Nat have been playing music together for more than 25 years, and all three musicians are closely linked to the Jackie McLean Institute at the Hartt School.

Mary DiPaola began her musical career at the Hartt School, where she received degrees in piano performance: jazz studies (BMus) under the direction of the legendary Jackie McLean, and music education (MMusEd) . She has been performing music throughout CT since, and has recorded twice as a bandleader (“Cat’s Cradle” and “Seventh Sign”). In addition to performing, Mary is an educator, having taught private piano lessons, on faculty at the Hartt School, and in East Hartford Public schools at Sunset Ridge Academy. She currently teaches at Aiken Elementary School in the West Hartford Public Schools district for grades K-5 and conducts the Gr 4-5 Chorus as well.
Nat Reeves is one of the world’s top bassists in jazz. His supportive and stimulating playing has uplifted a countless number of sessions and recording dates (most notably with the great altoists Jackie McLean and Kenny Garrett) and he has led his own CD State of Emergency. As a performer and educator, he has made a strong impact on the jazz world. In 2001 Nat began a full time teaching career at The Hartt School where the African American Music Studies Program had been renamed the Jackie McLean Institute of Jazz. Nat Reeves: www.natreeves.com
Drummer Kirk Woodard was raised in Windsor, CT by musical parents who filled the house with the sounds of Jackie McLean, Mozart, Frank Sinatra, and Horace Silver. He began drumming at age eight and progressed through the Artists Collective in Hartford, CT, an organization founded by alto saxophonist Jackie McLean and his wife Dollie. He is an in-demand drummer in the who is completing his Master’s degree in music at the Jackie McLean Institute of Jazz at the Hartt School.
