Maggie Gammell …
Over the past couple of years I have followed pretty traditional art school topics, drawing, sculpture and printmaking. I find myself focusing in on nature and the patterns produced in the natural word as well as figurative drawing in various materials. I’m not sure what it’s all about but I enjoy learning the craft of drawing and all it’s different techniques and sometimes a theme appears.
A medium does not exist that I do not like. So most of my drawings are mixed media. I make backgrounds to draw on by splashing paint around or collaging paper scraps onto a page and then stencil gesso on. All this adds to the texture created and disrupts the drawn line. I often use graphite, charcoal, ink, colored pencil and markers in one drawing.
I have many influences who I respond to as a jumping off point. The sculpture of Elizabeth Higgins O’Connor is all about re using materials she finds in charity shops. Old fabrics and papers are nailed to huge wooden structures, sometimes resembling half animal, half human, that appear to teeter on the edge of falling. These sculptures are brightly colored and inviting but huge and looming too.
Two years ago I visited the Uffizi Museum in Italy and was stopped in my tracks by Artemisia Gentileschis ‘Judith Slaying Holofernes’. For me it is a perfect reaction to the violence perpetrated against her and depicts the internal anger felt by many women across the centuries.
Nancy Baker Cahill uses her huge charcoal and graphite abstract drawings in 4th wall app to enable users to see her art in an augmented reality through their phone. Putting her artwork in the hands of the viewer to display wherever they want in the world.
J.C. Phillips is a local artist to Connecticut whose prolific body of work truly represents a working artist for me. Watercolor, comic illustration, collage, needle crafts and storytelling are part of her everyday work.
Thank you for taking the time to view my art, I hope you enjoyed it.
