The Andrew Wilcox Trio is a modern jazz group led by Hartford-based pianist Andrew Wilcox. Hailing from Worcester, Massachusetts originally, Andrew formed the trio with Akron, Ohio native drummer Joshua Leslie and Worcester bassist Conway Campbell Jr. during their time as students at the Hartt School of Music. The compositions they perform include a variety of obscure tunes from lesser known 70’s and 80’s jazz musicians and Andrew Wilcox’s originals. Andrew’s originals are an organic output of his time spent out in nature combined with his life experiences up to this point. The result is a combination of powerful and intense swingin grooves, in addition to wistful and spacey melodies. Andrew’s eclectic influences has pushed his music forward as he follows in the footsteps of progressive jazz musicians of the past.
Growing up studying classical music, the sounds of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, Herbie Hancock, and Wayne Shorter led him to study jazz. Throughout High School, Andrew studied under numerous musicians in the Worcester Area, most notably Rick Cain, Dick Odgren, Rich Ardizzone, and Tucker Antell. With their support and guidance, he found his way to the District and All-State Bands in Massachusetts.
Following High School, Andrew continued to the Hartt School where he currently studies with world renowned musicians including pianists Rick Germanson, Zaccai Curtis and Chris Casey, bassist Nat Reeves, trombonist Steve Davis, and saxophonists Javon Jackson, Rene McLean, Michael Thomas, and Abe Burton. Andrew has had the opportunity to play venues such as Symphony Hall, Mechanics Hall, The Iridium Jazz Club and the Newport Jazz Festival.
During his time in Hartford, Andrew has become an active member of the Hartford Jazz Community playing regularly at venues like Black-Eyed Sally’s and Integrity n Music. He regularly performs with many of local musicians including Haneef Nelson, David Chevan, Ed Fast and Rob Zapulla.
